Situated in south-east Crete, Makrygialos ('Long Beach') nestles below a dramatic mountain backdrop and has a unique micro-climate.
Its main blue-flag beach offers safe shallow bathing, never far from an available sun bed and parasol. Several small attractive local bars and tavernas run along the western side of the bay leading to the village harbour.
Visit the mountain village of Pefki (15 minutes drive) or explore the many unspoilt local coves and beaches. South-east Crete boasts several archaeological sites, monasteries and spectacular gorges.
The ancient port of Sitia is a 30 minute drive north through spectacular mountain scenery. Once there, browse through a variety of shops (leather goods/accessories/shoes in abundance!) and enjoy a meal at the harbour-side. The cost of dining is very reasonable; quality and quantity never disppointing.
Local morning markets are held in Makrigialos(Fridays), Sitia (Tuesdays) and Lerapetra (Saturday).
For more active holiday makers, Go-Karting is located 20 minutes drive from Makrigialos.
